I am currently an Assistant Professor of Microbiology in the Biology Department. I came to UMass Dartmouth from Harvard University, where I was a postdoctoral research and teaching fellow in the department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology from 2003-2005. Prior to Harvard University, I taught Marine Science at Babson College. I received my B.A. in Biology/geology from Smith College and my Ph.D. in Biological Oceanography from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Joint Program in Oceanography. I specialize in the evolution of primary producers, with particular interests in the phylogenetics and phylogeography of dinoflagellates and cyanobacteria, symbioses involving these organisms, and the role of horizontal gene transfer. My current research involves comparative genomics of cyanobacteria and the loss of genomic material that occurs in symbiotic cyanobacteria. This fall, I am teaching General Microbiology, and I will be offering Marine Microbiology in Spring 2006. |
