Biography
Dr. Harvey Jian-Min Hou received his B.Sc. in Physical Chemistry from Wuhan University and Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from Peking University, and spent 13+ years on biochemistry research. This makes him fit well in the field of Analytical Chemistry and Biochemistry. Before joining UMass Dartmouth in 2006, Dr. Hou was an assistant professor of Bioanalytical Chemistry at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, which is one of the top 10 undergraduate universities in West. Since 2003 he has been appointed an adjunct faculty at the Rockefeller University, which is one of the leading research institutions in biological sciences worldwide. As an active member in the field of photosynthesis research, he was invited to give talks at Washington State University and Missouri State University, as well as in the regional and national academic conferences.

Being a staff scientist or faculty member, Dr. Hou has been focusing on the structure and functional relationships of membrane proteins in vitro and in vivo , and has published four review articles and 30+ research papers in peer-reviewed journals, including Journal of the American Chemical Society, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA, and Biochemistry. In China, Dr. Hou received grants from the CAS President Foundation and the CAS Competitive Innovative Fund in Biotechnology. At Gonzaga University, Dr. Hou secured one Merck/AAAS undergraduate research award. One user proposal submitted to the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) was approved, which allows Hou's group to access PNNL's state-of-the-art facilities. In terms of evaluating research proposal, he was invited to judge one standard grant proposal in photosynthesis research for the National Science Foundation. Dr. Hou anticipates submitting research grant proposals, "Molecular Mechanisms of American Cranberries Against Environmental Stress," "Biospired Mn-containing Water-splitting Catalysts and Bioenergy," and "Photoreactions in Photosystems and Rhodopsins Using Pulsed Photoacoustic Spectroscopy," to National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, US Department of Energy, and US Department of Agriculture for funding in 2008-2009. In the past, Dr. Hou has advised or co-advised one Ph.D. student, one M.S. student, and three undergraduate (B.Sc. or B.A.) students towards their dissertation or thesis.
